The Southern end of the World

The Southern end of the World

Chile

The longest country in the world.

About this exploration

Patagonia, where the winds rage and nature becomes even more untamed.

Chile is considered the longest country in the world. It goes from the fjords where Fernando Magellan navigates through a labyrinth of ancient valleys polished by glaciers and thus tries to avoid sailing the infamous Cape Horn and waters treacherous.

Atacama Desert

Chile is considered the longest country in the world. It goes from the fjords where Fernando Magellan navigates through a labyrinth of ancient valleys polished by glaciers and thus tries to avoid sailing the infamous Cape Horn and waters treacherous.

On the other side of the country, 2,700 miles to the north, the driest desert in the world, Atacama, a kaleidoscope of colors of reddish sands, blue lagoons, oases, and salt flats. An arid land, rich that with few drops of rain, plants do not take long to bloom.

Flamingos, vicuñas, guanacos, foxes, rodents, and reptiles adapted to a place with more similarities to Mars than Earth.

Chile resembles a long snake that behind it, the Andes is a giant wall that cools the fertile valleys of volcanic lands. A short distance away, the Pacific and the cold Humboldt current rises in the south and push plankton to the surface, food for hundreds of species. It becomes the richest marine ecosystem in the world.

Land of volcanoes with more than 2,500 of them, of which 80 are active, Ojos del Salado being the highest in the world, but without diminishing the importance of Chillán, Antuco, Capahue, Cayaqui, Lanín, Lonquimay, Mocho Choshuenco, the Puyehue complex. -Cordón Caulle, Antillanca, Osorno, Calbuco, Chaitén, Llaima and Villarrica.

People in their lowlands have learned to live with them, know that at some point they wake up and throw columns of ash for months or years and then go into inactivity, calming down and sleep perhaps for several generations, those stories of eruptions turn into legends.

But this land of volcanic ash and abundant rivers that carry fertile material from the Andes to the valleys give the perfect characteristics for the production of fruits and vegetables; Chile is one of the largest exporters of cherries, grapes, blueberries, apples, walnuts, avocados.

The first vines were brought from Peru and planted in the central lands of Chile

A document dating back to the 16th century said: “There are vineyards and nowhere in the Indies has such good grapes grown as in this land.” The first vines were brought from Peru and planted in the central lands of Chile; the seeds found the fertile soils, and the climate gave life to the different types of grape varieties. This combination of elements has made Chile the largest Latin American producer of wines and the ninth worldwide.

The Incas who expanded the domain to the south reached the Maule Valley (central Chile) land of the Mapuches, fierce people who have resisted any conquest. They represent ten percent of the Chilean population, some of them still maintain their language, Mapuzugun.

Southmobile in the valley

Thousands of miles away, surrounded by the ocean, Easter Island is inhabited by people who populated these islands after sailing for thousands of miles from Polynesia, the Rapa-Nui. A culture, fisherman, agricultural and tribal. Their ancestors were the creators of the Moais, those gigantic and mystical figures of humanoid form.

As a result of his astronomical knowledge, some of the figures are perfectly located in the direction of the southern equinoxes of winter and summer.

This beautiful island is an open book that tells us about the environmental problems that its inhabitants endured as well as slavery and domination.

Tricontinental Country

From the Andes to the Coast

Looking at the stars in the Atacama Desert or walking the trails of Patagoni

Chile is a tricontinental country, having territories in Oceania, Antarctica, and South America; 26 percent of these territories have been protected. With 42 national parks and 46 natural reserves that go from the extremes where rain is scarce in the north are the parks of Lauca, Volcán Isluga, Llullaillaco, Pan de Azúcar, land of active volcanoes, geysers, lagoons of unreal colors, and salt flats, where the rocks break due to high temperatures.

Going through them will take us to the origins of our planet, at night being in height, with a dry and dark environment, it will take us to raise our eyes to the sky to appreciate the galaxies and planets like never before. It is not fortuitous that 70% of the world’s astronomical observatories are in Chile. ALMA is the most ambitious astronomical project in the world. Located 5,000 km in the middle of the Atacama desert, it reveals the mysteries of the universe every day.

But the desert is not an empty and isolated space as it would give us the impression. At first sight, guanacos and vicuñas run through these large spaces, where rodents and reptiles know how to survive in this dramatic environment; the lagoons also come to life when visited by flamingos.

Traveling towards the central part of Chile through parks like Río Clarillo, La Campana, Radal Siete Tazas, and Laguna del Laja have different ecosystems than the northern area: with a rather Mediterranean and benevolent climate, these protected areas go from the Andes to the Coast.

Due to their microclimates, they are home to hazelnut trees, canelos, oaks, foxes, pumas, and hundreds of birds.

Towards the south, the scenery is different with a colder and rainier climate, a place of crystalline lagoons and rivers, large elk, araucaria, cypress, laurels cover vast expanses of unique greenery.

The volcanoes with their snow-capped peaks, call for adventurers who seek to reach their peaks, and at their feet settle picturesque towns with European influence.

Patagonia, where the winds rage and nature becomes even more untamed. Torres del Paine granite walls carved by extinct glaciers shaped a beautiful work of art. Walk along these trails, with magnificent views and an ecstatic fauna, condors, Darwin’s rhea, puma, flamingos, deer, woodpeckers, and owls, are the companions of trips.

Looking at the stars in the Atacama Desert or walking the trails of Patagonia is a paradise for people who seek solitude, close contact with nature, and those who enjoy disconnecting from the modern.

At night, enjoy the comfort of beautiful lodges and enjoy an exquisite gourmet meal with a glass of Chilean wine, remembering the good memories of the trip.
